Grand-Popo to Cotonou: Transport, Duration and Tips
Travelling between Grand-Popo and Cotonou is an essential route for any visitor or resident of the Beninese coast. Whether for administrative errands, shopping, an excursion or an international flight, you will regularly use this road through varied landscapes. Here are all the options for this journey.
Cotonou Grand-Popo route
The distance between Grand-Popo and Cotonou is about 85 kilometres via the paved national road RNIE1. Travel time varies considerably depending on the mode of transport, time of day and traffic conditions.
In normal conditions, allow 1h30 to 2h30 by road. At peak hours (7:30am-9am and 5pm-7pm), the journey can take up to 3 hours, especially through Abomey-Calavi and Cotonou.
The route first takes the national road along the coast, passing Ouidah and Pahou, before entering Cotonou's suburbs. The scenery alternates between coconut groves, oil palm plantations, marshes and increasingly dense urban areas.

Bush taxi
The bush taxi is the most widespread form of public transport in Benin. It is also the cheapest.
Departure: bush taxis leave from Grand-Popo bus station (near the central market). Departures happen when the vehicle is full (6 to 8 passengers).
Route: the taxi uses the RNIE1 and stops at Abomey-Calavi bus station, from where you take a zemidjan or taxi to your final destination in Cotonou.
Duration: 2 to 3 hours depending on the number of stops and traffic.
Cost: 1,500 to 2,500 FCFA (2.29 to 3.81 EUR) per person.
Bush taxis are standard cars (Toyota, saloon), sometimes a bit old. For a few thousand FCFA extra, you can negotiate a private taxi that will drop you at your exact destination.
