Phone and Internet in Grand-Popo: Networks, Plans and Connection
Staying connected in Grand-Popo is now perfectly possible. Whether you are a passing traveller, a digital nomad seeking a desk facing the Atlantic, or a future resident, mobile coverage and internet access have improved considerably in recent years on the Beninese coast. Here is everything you need to know for your phone and connection.
Mobile network
The mobile network covers most of Grand-Popo commune, from the town centre to the beaches and coastal villages. 4G coverage is good in the town and tourist areas like Ahozon, Gle and Avlo. Moving away towards plantations or Bouche du Roy, the signal may weaken and switch to 3G, which remains sufficient for messaging and navigation.
Voice calls pass without difficulty in almost all inhabited areas. Remote Lac Ahome villages and some sections of the Route des Peches have temporary blind spots. Overall, the network is reliable for daily use.
Operators
Benin has two main mobile operators, both present in Grand-Popo.
MTN Benin is the market leader with the widest coverage. Its 4G network covers Grand-Popo and its surroundings, and its data offers are the most used by residents and travellers. Top-ups are available everywhere: official shops, street kiosks and via Mobile Money.
Moov Africa is the second operator, with comparable coverage in town but sometimes more patchy in rural areas. Its data plans are often slightly cheaper. Moov also has a Mobile Money service (Moov Money).
Both operators sell prepaid SIM cards at their shops and through resellers. To buy one, simply present your passport. The process takes five minutes and the card costs between 500 and 1,500 FCFA (0.76 to 2.29 EUR).
Plans
Beninese plans work essentially on a prepaid basis. You buy credit (called "units") which you then convert into a data plan or calls via USSD codes.
For internet, here are the price ranges:
- 1 GB: 500 to 1,000 FCFA (0.76 to 1.52 EUR)
- 5 GB: 2,500 to 4,000 FCFA (3.81 to 6.10 EUR)
- 10 GB: 5,000 to 7,000 FCFA (7.62 to 10.67 EUR)
- 20 GB: 9,000 to 12,000 FCFA (13.72 to 18.29 EUR)
"Night" or "weekend" plans offer larger volumes at reduced prices. At MTN, Xtra Data plans are popular for their value. At Moov, Max plans are appreciated by heavy users.
For calls, expect about 30 FCFA (0.05 EUR) per minute to all national operators. "Unlimited" plans to a specific operator cost between 2,000 and 5,000 FCFA (3.05 to 7.62 EUR) per month.
Practical tip: If staying more than a week, buy a 10 GB plan and top up in tranches. SIM cards expire after three to six months without recharge depending on the operator.
WiFi
WiFi is not as ubiquitous in Grand-Popo as in European capitals. Nevertheless, most tourist accommodations offer free WiFi in common areas and sometimes in rooms.
Beachfront ecolodges and hotels generally offer sufficient speed for messaging, browsing and social media. For video streaming or video calls, quality may vary depending on occupancy and weather.
Lion Bar and some beach restaurants offer free WiFi to their customers, ideal for working while sipping a fresh fruit juice facing the waves.
If you need a reliable connection for work, tethering from your smartphone on 4G remains the most stable solution. Remember to get a generous data plan.
Internet
Internet in Benin is generally adequate for the region. In Grand-Popo, average 4G speed is between 10 and 25 Mbps download, which allows comfortable browsing, video watching and video calls in good conditions.
Evenings and weekends, the network can be busier. If working online, favour off-peak hours for heavy downloads.
For digital nomads and remote professionals, several Grand-Popo accommodations offer adapted spaces. See our guide on digital nomad in Grand-Popo for detailed recommendations.
In case of an outage at your accommodation, operator shops in town make it easy to top up your plan.
Tips
- Buy a local SIM card: roaming fees are high. An MTN or Moov card is much more economical.
- Check your phone compatibility: Benin uses 900 and 1800 MHz bands for 2G-3G and 800 and 2600 MHz bands for 4G. Most recent smartphones are compatible.
- Use WhatsApp and Telegram: instant messaging is the preferred communication method for Beninese. Most professional and personal exchanges go through these apps.
- Top up online: MyMTN and Moov App allow top-ups and plan purchases without moving.
- Keep your SIM card: if you return to Benin, you can reactivate it simply.
