Money and Currency in Grand-Popo: Cash, Cards and Mobile Money
Managing money is one of the most important practical questions for a trip to Grand-Popo. Unlike European destinations where everything is paid by card, here cash is king and modern payment methods are still limited. This guide explains everything you need to know to manage your budget.
Grand-Popo practical info covers all aspects of trip preparation. See our complete guide for everything before departure, and our Grand-Popo travel budget page for a detailed expense estimate.
The CFA franc
The local currency is the CFA franc (Communaute Financiere d'Afrique), ISO code XOF. It is a stable currency, pegged to the euro at a fixed rate since 1999.
The CFA franc is used in eight West African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. It is not usable in Central African countries (which use a different CFA franc, XAF).
Banknotes in circulation are 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 FCFA. Coins are 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 250 and 500 FCFA (250 and 500 coins are less common). It is practical to have small denominations (500, 1,000, 2,000 FCFA) for daily purchases.
Exchange rate
The exchange rate has been fixed since 1999:
1 EUR = 656 FCFA
This rate is guaranteed by the French Treasury. It does not fluctuate, unlike the currencies of neighbouring countries (Ghanaian cedi, Nigerian naira). For other currencies, the rate is calculated on the basis of the market exchange rate.
Quick conversion examples:
- 1,000 FCFA = about 1.50 EUR
- 5,000 FCFA = about 7.60 EUR
- 10,000 FCFA = about 15.25 EUR
- 25,000 FCFA = about 38 EUR
- 50,000 FCFA = about 76 EUR
All prices in this guide are given in FCFA and EUR to help you find your bearings.
Where to change money
Before departure
The easiest option is to bring euros in cash and exchange them on site. 50, 100 and 200 EUR notes are the easiest to exchange. US dollars (USD) are also accepted but the rate is less favourable.
Exchange a small amount at Cotonou airport on arrival (the rate is reasonable) to have immediate cash. Avoid changing money on the street -- rates are unfavourable and scam risks are real.
In Grand-Popo
Exchange possibilities in Grand-Popo itself are limited. There is no dedicated exchange bureau. Hotels and ecolodges can sometimes exchange euros for their guests, but at an unfavourable rate.
The best strategy is to withdraw enough cash in Cotonou before heading to Grand-Popo. The Grand-Popo market sometimes offers informal exchange with merchants -- avoid for large amounts.
ATMs
In Grand-Popo
There is one ATM in Grand-Popo, at the Credit Mutuel agency near the market. It accepts international Visa and MasterCard. However, its reliability is random: it may be out of order, out of service or empty for several days.
Do not rely solely on this ATM. It is common for travellers to run out of cash because the ATM is not working.
In Cotonou
ATMs are numerous and reliable in Cotonou. Withdraw enough cash before leaving for Grand-Popo. Recommended banks: Bank of Africa, Ecobank, Societe Generale Benin.
Withdrawal limits are generally 200,000 to 400,000 FCFA (305 to 610 EUR) per transaction, with fees of 3,000 to 5,000 FCFA (5 to 8 EUR) per withdrawal depending on your bank. International exchange fees are applied by your issuing bank.
Mobile Money
Mobile Money is the most widespread payment method in Benin. Two operators share the market: MTN MoMo (leader) and Moov Money. The principle is simple: money is stored on your phone, and transactions are made by SMS or app.
Travellers can open a Mobile Money account by presenting their passport at an MTN or Moov shop. The process takes 10 to 15 minutes. You receive a PIN code that secures your transactions.
With Mobile Money, you can:
- Pay at most shops, restaurants and hotels
- Send money to other people
- Withdraw money from MoMo agents (everywhere in town)
- Pay for your market purchases
Merchants generally display the MTN MoMo or Moov Money logo. It is the most practical payment method for small amounts.
Bank cards
Visa and MasterCard are accepted at high-end hotels and ecolodges in Grand-Popo, but rarely in restaurants and local shops.
Card payment fees can reach 3 to 5% at some establishments. Check before presenting your card.
American Express and Diners Club cards are rarely accepted in Benin, even in luxury hotels.
Tipping
Tipping is not compulsory in Benin but is appreciated. Here are some guidelines:
- Restaurants: 5 to 10% of the bill if the service was satisfactory
- Guides: 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA (3 to 8 EUR) per day, depending on quality
- Drivers: 1,000 to 2,000 FCFA (1.50 to 3 EUR) for a trip
- Porters: 500 to 1,000 FCFA (0.80 to 1.50 EUR) per bag
- Hotel staff: 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA (3 to 8 EUR) for a few days
Cash tips are preferred. Avoid giving sweets or pens to children -- it encourages begging.
